Fude Q&A
How did you discover Fude brushes?
I was fortunate to stumble upon fude from a friend who gifted me my first ever Japanese makeup brush, it was infatuation at first sight!
What do you like about Fude brushes?
The craftsmanship. Fude brushes are by far the best makeup brushes available, they simply perform better. In addition to the craftsmanship and superior performance, I enjoy the experience of using these precious tools and pieces of art in my beauty routine.
Can you name your top 3-5 brushes, and why?
Most certainly not! As a collector, I do not do well with favorites. But if I had to choose only a few, they are the brushes that best epitomize Japanese culture and craftsmanship with makeup application functionality. For example, the Chikuhodo MK-II or a similar makie handle large squirrel powder brush, the Koyomo saikoho goat cheek brush, and the Koyudo yakusugi brushes.
Do you have any advice for people starting out with Fude?
For people starting out, I recommend separating brushes into two categories: one for everyday essentials, the other for the joy of experimentation. In the essential category are the brushes you will research heavily, budget, and likely use fairly heavily. In the second category are brushes that perhaps you are not sure about but you allow yourself to explore, to try new shapes, to try new hair types, and to indulge your curiosity. I believe both categories are equally fulfilling. Depending on your needs one category may take priority over the other, but please do allow yourself the joy of experimenting with diverse and special brushes!
How did you get into makeup?
I was introduced to makeup by my beautiful mother who always took her time to do her makeup. Even as a young child I was curious about the makeup and tools she used to get ready. I would sneak into her makeup bag and inevitably break something. As I got older, she gifted me age-appropriate products to play with.
Do you have favorite makeup artists that you look up to?
I have great admiration for Lisa Eldridge. I love Lisa’s subtle creativity, use of fude brushes, and the fact that she is also a collector of beauty-related products.
