Ancient Japanese cedar trees on UNESCO World Heritage-listed Yakushima island grow at an altitude of more than 500 meters above sea level. Yakusugi (屋久杉) is cedar more than 1,000 years old, and the wood is known for its sublime fragrance, durability, and elegant grain. It is strictly prohibited to cut down Yakusugi, so the handles of these brushes are made from stumps of trees that fell naturally in typhoons. These trees are called 'Domaiboku', which literally means buried trees in the ground.
