Early August is hot and steamy time of year in Japan, the peak of summer when hanabi (fireworks) decorate the sky (in non-Covid years), furin (glass wind chimes) sound on the breeze, and kakigori (shaved ice) are the order of the day. Atsui means 'hot' in Japanese, and from the end of July to August is the peak heat time. The most common thing you'll hear in conversation is, 'Atsui desune', meaning 'It's really hot, isn't it?!'
