Ono no Komachi

This brush is inspired by the famous Japanese poet, Ono no Komachi. Ono no Komachi is one of the leading poets in history who lived in the Heian period. The handwriting of Komachi, who also had a talent for calligraphy, and the appearance of the past day are expressed in black and white.

A unique collaboration of masters

Behind the brushes is an unprecedented collaboration of three masters in their fields: Hiroto Rakuso, one of Japan's premier gold leaf artists; Yoshiaki Nakano, an internationally revered senior makeup artist; and Yoshiki Uematsu, one of Japan's leading brush artisans working in the town of Kumano in Hiroshima Prefecture.

The story behind the collection

Nakano, who has often visited Kyoto for business over the years, was deeply impressed by the art and cultural assets of the ancient city. Through his friendship with Hiroto Rakuso, a unique foil artist born in Nishijin, Kyoto, known for his unparalleled sense and skill, Nakano developed a deeper connection with and understanding of these traditional crafts.

Nakano has often visited Rakuso's atelier in Kyoto, where tradition and modernity thrive. He believed that traditional techniques he witness could be used to create something far beyond my imagination. The result would be a work of art that embodies the worldviews of both artists, designed to surprise and captivate all who see it.

As a makeup artist, Nakano's choice in product was naturally the world of beauty: a cosmetic brush made in the famous brushmaking town of Kumano, Hiroshima Prefecture. Awaiting the collaborators there was Yoshitaka Uematsu, who entered the world of brush making at just 18 years old. The three, who share a sensitivity as artists and a passion for handcrafting products with a deep sense of value, decided to collaborate. They began making a prototype immediately, a combination of the craft of gold leaf and brushmaking.

In addition to the color of the foil and brush, the three parties pursued the feel and comfort of the brush, not allowing any compromises. To create the perfect brush, there were many discussions, and made many prototypes. Finally, the brushes in the "Three Great Beauties of the World" collection were born.
